Description

  • Carel Beschey
  • A river landscape with the Holy Family and the Infant Saint John the Baptist
  • oil on copper

Provenance

Acquired by a descendant of the present owner in the 1930s.

Condition

The colours are more yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The copper panel is flat and stable. The overall condition appears to be very good indeed. The panel is now very dirty and the varnish layer thick and discoloured. The varnish layer tends to impede assessment under ultra violet light, but only very minor local repair is detectable, for example to the folds of the Virgin's robes, and no major damages at all. This lot is offered with a later gilt wood frame in the French style, in good condition apart from a few chips.
