Catalogue Note

This sketch relates to a portrait painted by Lawrence in 1811, which has descended in the sitter's family and still remains in a private collection. The eldest daughter of William, 1st Earl of Lonsdale and his wife Lady Augusta Fane, daughter of John, 9th Earl of Westmorland, Lady Elizabeth died unmarried in 1869. The unfinished picture was delivered to her father by the artist's executors in 1830, and descended in the family until it was sold in these Rooms in 1974.
