Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative, thought the colours are slightly stronger. The picture is painted on a stable three piece panel, vertically joined, which is flat but for a very negligible bow. The paint surface appears to be in very good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint visible to the naked eye except for one very minor paint loss at the panels edge under the frame next to the inscription upper right. Under a raking light there is evidence of retouching to the panel joins running through the sitter's shoulders. There is a discoloured varnish overall. Examination under ultraviolet reveals some very minor old scattered flecks of retouching to the background. There is also retouching to the panel joins which is more pronounced where they intersect the costume. Otherwise there are old minor flecks of retouching to the face, below the lower lip, to the right most part of the forehead and to the left cheek. Ultraviolet also confirms the presence of the discoloured varnish which hinders further inspection however the painting appears to be in great overall condition for a work of this date. Offered in a painted black and gold wood frame in good overall condition.
