Condition

The catalogue illustrations are a little too red in tone. Both canvases have old relinings, which are basically sound, although that of the gentleman is a little uneven upper left. Both paintings appear to be in excellent overall condition. Both are dirty and the varnish layer discoloured. The only damage of any note is an old repaired L shape tear of approximately 10 by 10 cm in the background of the man's portrait just to the left of his head and running across his ear and to his temple. Apart from this virtually no later intervention is discernible under ultra voilet light although a small degree of later impainting should perhaps be allowed for beneath the old varnish. The paint surfaces of both are beautifully preserved with all the orginal impasto and detailing intact. Both canvases are offered in later plain giltwood frames in very good condition, that of the lady wtih slightly paler gilding.
