The picture is more yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has been relined and the paint surface appears to be in good overall condition if a little thin in places such as around the warrior's calf and knee. There has been some minor scattered flaking caused by an old extensive craquelure, and evidence of this can be seen in the background by the sitter's shoulder and below his calf as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. There is also varnish and surface dirt in evidence overall. Retouching to what appears to be an old repaired area of damage centre right, possibly an old patch, measuring approx. 14 cm is visible under a raking light, as is retouching to an old partial stretcher bar mark, lower right measuring approx. 10 cm. Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the presence of the varnish and reveals several campaigns of localised retouching, more recently to two areas of restored damage in the background upper right, and around the canvas edges. There is also some minor scattered areas of strengthening such as in the warriors eye, calf and headband and hand. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame with scattered losses.
