Description

  • A boy using his hat to drink water from a fountain
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The picture appears to be richer in colour and more luminous in tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has been relined and the paint surface appears to be in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint except for a very minor loss to the boy's vest lower right. There also appears to be a yellowed varnish and surface dirt overall. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the presence of the old varnish which appears to have blanched in places. There is also evidence of several old campaigns of retouching such as to the boys elbow, and the most recent being to the highlights visible on the boy's cheekbones. All retouching however appears to be cosmetic, not structural and is obscured by the aforementioned varnish. Offered in a plain gold painted wood frame on good overall condition.
