Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative, though the painting is slightly lighter in tone. The copper is flat, except for three out of four corners which suffered knocks in the past and have since been restored (though not immediately visible to the naked eye). The painting has been recently cleaned and restored. The varnish is clear and even. Under ultra-violet light the restoration in the upper left and lower left corners becomes more visible; there are some scattered retouchings on the tree and foliage upper centre; and other minor localised retouchings. Retouching is visible to a vertical damage, measuring approx. 6cm. and lying parallel to the righthand vertical edge (lower right), but there appear to be no other notable damages. The flesh tones do not show signs of wear and the painting is in good condition overall. The 19th-century Empire-style gilt wood and plaster frame is in good condition, with only minor chips or losses. The painting can be hung as is.
