Description
- Hercules and Omphale
- oil on canvas
Condition
The catalogue illustration is representative if a little dark. The painting appears to be on its original canvas, and has recently been restretched. The picture may have had a recent surface clean but remains dirty and in need of restoration and cleaning. The overall condition of the paint surface appears to be very good indeed. There are some minor old losses along the lower margin and there are indications of previous incipient lifting in some of the darks, for example around the neck of Omphale and in the background. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals only minor local retouchings, the largest only 2 x 2 cm., chiefly scattered along the leg and chest of Hercules.
This lot is offered with a later parcel gilt wood frame, with some chips and losses.
