Catalogue Note

We are most grateful to Ms. Anna Koldeweij for her assistance in cataloguing this lot, as well as to Norbert Middelkoop of the Amsterdams Historisch Museum. According to Ms. Koldeweij, the fact that there are five headmen portrayed here indicates that this is a representation of both the Amsterdam Gold- and Silversmith's guilds. Unlike other cities, such as The Hague, Haarlem or Leiden, where respectively seven, twelve or four members were listed in the guild's board, Amsterdam appointed, from 1694 onwards, five headmen, two of whom were goldsmiths and three of whom were silversmiths. The identity of the sitters corresponds with the members that were listed in 1701, the year this painting was made.

The silver objects on the table offer us too few details to establish for certain their city of origin, but nothing indicates that they could not be of Amsterdam. Most likely they represent the 'latest models', which one would expect to find in a representation of such a high-profile group portrait such as this. A further indication that points in the direction of Amsterdam, is the fact that Pool is known to have had links to the Amsterdam Guild through his father, who had been a member there for years.
