Description
- Hendrick Cornelisz. van Vliet
- The interior of the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft
- signed and dated lower centre on the pillar: H.van.vliet./ 1655
- oil on canvas
Condition
The catalogue illustration is slightly too red in tone. The canvas has been very recently relined, restretched and restored. The lining is a little heavy and has rather pressed the paint surface. The paint surface appears to be in poor overall condition. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals extensive recent restoration throughout the entire picture surface. The best preserved parts are mostly the figures. It is hard to tell whether all the restoration is justified, although some areas such as the darks certainly appear worn, or whether it is superfluous. The varnish is clear and even.
This lot is offered with an unsuitable modern painted black frame with painted gold sight edge.
