Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition, and is slightly lighter in tone that the catalogue illustration suggests, and more vibrant. There is no apparent extant damage or loss of paint, though there is one area of visible retouching to the left shoulder, as can be seen in the illustration, as well as some minor visible hatched retouching in the flesh tones of the sitter's arm on the left, also faintly visible in the illustration. The painting appears to be in good condition overall however, and does not require any significant work. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some minor flecks of retouching to the sitter's body, predominantly in the hair, in a small area of the throat, and in the lower section of the sitter's costume and arms. There is also relatively extensive hatched retouching to the background. FRAME Held in its original carved wooden frame, with original late Stuart silvering.
