Condition

The catalogue illustrations are rather too red in tone. Both canvases have quite recent relinings which are a little uneven and rigid. Both are now now a little dirty with a layer of very discoloured varnish. The paint surface of both pictures appears in quite good overall condition: the details of the flesh, lace, braid and costume seem generally well preserved, but the darker areas of the both costumes have sunk and appear abraded with some loss of detail, especially the lady's dress. There has been some restoration to both paintings, especially around the margins of both canvases, where there has been a good deal of in-painting, up to but not including the coats of arms. There is a large repaired loss or old tear on the left margin of the female portrait. The faces and other details are much better preserved and here the restoration is to small local losses and retouchings, for example to the eyeborw, cheek and beard of the man. The reapir is a little crude and is plainly visible to the naked eye in some parts. Both pictures are offered with modern gilt plaster frames, with some minor damages.
