Description

  • Jan Baptist van Fornenburgh
  • A still life with flowers in a glass roemer, on a ledge with fallen petals
  • signed lower right: yan. : batt.a f.
  • oil on copper

Provenance

Private collection, France;
With Richard Green, London, 1989;
From whom acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The support consists of a single, stable, flat, copper sheet. The paint surface is secure under an even, slightly yellowed varnish. The details of the flowers, butterfly lower left and very front of the table edge are in good condition and are largely well preserved. The darker pigments of the roemer, back of the table and background are somewhat abraded, particularly the latter where retouching work and repaint is evident to the naked eye. This is confirmed under UV light which is largely impeded by the aforementioned varnish. Offered in a stained wooden frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The painting can be dated circa 1629-35 on the basis of similarities with a signed and dated work of 1629 in a private collection in Germany1 and a signed and dated work of 1635, with similar lilies, which was with David Koetser, Zurich, in 1982.  We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the Rijskbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie for confirming the attribution to Fornenburgh on the basis of photographs.
