Follower of Francesco Guardi

The canvas has a recent, firm relining which has somewhat flattened the paint surface, which is otherwise secure under a glossy varnish. The details of the architecture and boats are nicely preserved under a glassy varnish although some of the glazes have worn very thin. Inspection under UV light reveals significant scattered retouchings throughout and an old restored damage of approx. 5 by 2 cm. in the lower left of the sky. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame with some minor losses.

The composition is based on Guardi's original (58 by 76.5 cm.) in the National Gallery, London (see A. Morassi, Guardi, I dipinti, Venice 1993, vol. I, p. 387, cat. no. 408, reproduced vol. II, fig. 429).
