Description
- Michele Marieschi
- Venice, a view of Piazza San Marco looking towards the Basilica
- oil on canvas
Condition
The colours of the original are a touch more blue in tone than they appear in the catalogue illustration.
The canvas has a stiff relining which is somewhat loose on its stretcher.
The paint surface is secure and the details and intentions of the artist’s original design are fairly well preserved under an even varnish although somewhat abraded in the lower half of the painting where the pigments of the piazza and architecture are darker. This is particularly noticeable in the lower left corner where there is some evidence of figures having been altered and or erased in the shadows.
Inspection under UV light reveals three small old restored damages in the sky: one L shaped approx. 3 by 7 cm. upper left; one approx. 3 by 4 cm. upper left of the campanile; the third to the left of the campanile approx. 2 cm. squared and some scattered minor retouchings elsewhere most notably along the margins.
Offered in a carved gilt wood frame with some structural cracks and minor losses but otherwise in good condition.
