Catalogue Note

The former is a copy after Noah Leading the Animals onto the Ark given to both Jacopo and Francesco Bassano in a private collection in Milan (see A. Ballarin, Jacopo Bassano, Padua 1995, vol. I, tome II, p. 469A). The latter is a copy after Jacopo Bassano's signed original from 1574 in the Bildergalerie in Potsdam (ibid, p. 475, a detail reproduced in colour vol. I, tome I, fig. 126). Variants of both compositions given by Ballarin to Jacopo's studio are in the Archiepiscopal Palace at Kromeriza, Czech Republic (ibid., pp. 464-65). A variant of Noah's Sacrifice After the Flood (125 by 176 cm.) by Francesco was sold in these Rooms, 3 July 1991, lot 69, for £30,000.
