Catalogue Note

The composition is known through a picture bequeathed to the Bristol City Art Gallery (Inv. no. K1655) by F. P. M. Schiller in 1946 which Robinson tentatively attributes to Willem van de Velde the Younger and dates to 1658 (M. S. Robinson, The Paintings of the Willem Van de Veldes, London 1990, p. 478-9).
