Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative. The support consists of a single oak panel, bevelled on all four margins, uncradled, and flat. The paint durface is generally quite well prwserved, though a little worn in some parts of the background. There are two short vertical surface splits in the lower right. Inspection under UV reveals some short strokes of retouching to the backing curtain and around the closed hand. Sold with a later decorative darkwood frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie for endorsing the attribution to Louis de Moni on the basis of photographs. This painting has in the past erroneously been identified as the painting sold Amsterdam, De Winter, 25 August 1773, lot 432, and in subsequent 18th-century sales, where the curtain is described as green and the measurements are different.  It is not uncommon to find De Moni repeating his compositions more than once.
