Catalogue Note

A copy by Teniers after Dosso Dossi's original in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (see A. Ballarin, Dosso Dossi, Padua 1995, vol. I, p. 309, no. 365, reproduced plate CXVII). This panel was produced for the Theatrum Pictorium, Teniers' 1660 record of the collection of Leopold Wilhelm, Archduke of Austria.

Margret Klinge has pointed out that Teniers' original of this painting, which she sees as a Workshop piece, is the one exhibited in Antwerp, Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, 11 May-1 September 1991, no. 103, and published in the exhibition catalogue: M. Klinge, David Teniers the Younger, Antwerp 1991, pp. 294-5, no. 103, reproduced.

The present picture however has a very distinguished provenance, forming part of a group of works by Teniers and his Workshop for the Theatrum Pictorum which were dispersed in 1978.
