Description

  • Pieter Brueghel the Younger
  • The Bird-Trap
  • oil on oak panel

Exhibited

London, Leonard Koetser, Old Master Paintings Exhibition, November 1959, no. 12, as Abel Grimmer (according to a label on the reverse).

Condition

The support consists of two horizontal oak panels, bevelled on all four edges and quite flat and stable. The painting is now covered with a masking varnish which effectively prevents inspection under ultra-violet light. The upper left hand side of the painting appears to have been lost or badly damaged in the past, the area of damage extending in about 2.5 cm. and extending to the join of the two panels in the centre. Some discolouration of the paint surface is visible to the naked eye in parts of the sky, and quite extensive past restoration shoudl be presumed here. This lot is sold with a modern maple veneer parcel gilt wood frame in good condition.
