Description

  • The Madonna and Child seated, flanked by Saint Francis of Assisi and another Franciscan saint, Saints Dominic and Barbara
  • tempera on panel, gold ground, in an engaged tabernacle frame

Condition

The catalogue illustration is a little red in tone. The panel support appears flat and stable with no major structural faults. There is a very small recent 50mm loss in the centre of the painting. The painting is in fair condition overall. The gold ground has now worn allowing the red bolus to show through and the Madonna's robes have degraded and been repainted. The tempera is much better preserved overall, especially in the other robes. There have been numerous careful retouchings to the faces and hands of the saints. Offerd with later gilt wood frame in good overall condition, some small chips.
