Catalogue Note

Between 1661 and 1665, Schellinks made an extensive European tour, apparently at the behest of the Amsterdam merchant Laurens van der Hem, who was amassing topographical drawings to bind into his massively extended copy of Blaeu's Atlas Maior; the Atlas van der Hem is now in the Royal Library, Vienna.1  The inscription on the verso, indicating that this drawing depicts a location outside London, is highly surprising on architectural grounds, but seems to be in the same hand as the autograph inscription, Buijten Rowaan, identifying the view in a drawing executed during Schellinks' French journey.2  Schellinks was in England for nearly two years, from 17 July 1661 until 18 April 1663.
