  • Pen and brown ink and watercolour with touches of gouache, over traces of black chalk within brown wash framing lines, on vellum;
    signed and dated, in brown ink, lower right: húet fils 1810. and inscribed with dimensions of elephant, in black ink, lower left: 14eme au 196 eme, also inscribed on back of the board in brown ink: L'Eléphant femelle, Elephas Indian. / par huet peintre du muséum l'histoire naturelle a Paris

Condition

Vellum laid down on board. This is in excellent condition. There is some yellow staining at the lower margin but otherwise in very good condition. Colours remain fresh and vibrant. Sold in simple wood frame

Catalogue Note

Huet has here depicted the elephant with great attention to detail, concentrating on the texture of its skin, and has produced a work that is both striking and realistic.  The Indian elephant is native to mainland Asia and is generally smaller than the African elephant.  See also lot 54.
