Condition

Paper appears to be torn across above head of seated man and across torso of standing one. May be some losses. Laid down, hinged and partly stuck down to mount at top edge. A thin strip made up at bottom left edge. Recommend study by specialized paper conservator for full understanding of condition.

Catalogue Note

Rosenberg and Prat date this around 1715, and point out that the head of a man leaning against a column in Les Plaisirs du Bal, now in the Dulwich Picture Gallery, may have been based on the seated figure in the original of this study.  Parker and Mathey see in it a model they identify in other Watteau drawings.
