Catalogue Note

Several other caricatures, mostly by Giambattista, also with all corners cut and often with pen and ink framing lines, were in the collection of the art historian Giovanni Morelli (1816-1891).  Eight of these, all by Giambattista, are now in the Castello Sforzesco, Milan.  They were formerly in the collection of Gustavo Frizzoni, who inherited some of Morelli's collection of drawings.Frizzoni also left to the Brera a caricature of a monk by Giandomenico. There was obviously more than one album of such caricatures in the Tiepolo family.  The 'Tomo terzo de caricature' which included 107 drawings, mostly by Giambattista (datable circa 1754-62), seems to have stayed in the possession of Giandomenico and served him as inspiration.  He sometimes included figures from his father's caricatures in his own drawings.
