Catalogue Note

Francesco Panini, son of Giovanni Paolo Panini, was one of a number of accomplished artists who worked in his father's studio, satisfying the high demand for architectural drawings and paintings in his manner.  Francesco made a number of drawings of St. Peter's, both exterior and interior.  A similar drawing, The Scala Regia in Saint Peter's Basilica, Rome, with the statue of Constantine, was sold New York, Christie's, 24 January 2006, lot 45.
