Condition

This watercolour is a rare survival from Lewis' Spanish tour of the early 1830s. The colours have faded very slightly, however they do retain much of their original vibrancy and strength. The paper has discoloured and there are some minor scattered areas of discolouration throughout the background of the composition. This work has not been laid down. Catalogue Note

The present drawing was executed in either Gibraltar or Tangier and therefore likely to date from May 1833, during Lewis's visit to Spain in 1832-33. Several other drawings of this lady survive. These include a study of her seated in profile (Sotheby's, London, 25 November 2004, lot 221) and a study of her seated facing the viewer (Sotheby's, London, 8 July 2011, lot 356). A third drawing showing the same pose as the present work was sold at Sotheby's, London, 17 June 1978, lot 145.
