Condition

Laid down on an old album page. Black chalk framing lines running through the border appear to have been drawn later. Scattered foxing throughout the sheet and light brown staining, particularly along the right and left margin. A small tiny brown stain at upper left hand side.

Catalogue Note

Bloemaert made numerous comparable sheets with various unconnected red chalk studies, many of which can be linked with his Tekenboek, a compendium of prints after drawings such as this, published after Bloemaert's death by his son, Frederik, and intended to be used as a drawing manual and a repertoire of figures and poses.1
