Although the bodycolour has remained in fresh and bold, some of the more delicate watercolour pigments have faded. The sheet has darkened considerably and this has affected the balance of the composition. The sheet has been laid down. In the later part of his career John Martin was often to be found working in the countryside around London. He appears to have been particularly attracted to the ancient oaks and open vistas of Richmond Park. Between 1844 and 1852 he exhibited eight views of the subject at the Royal Academy.
