Catalogue Note

This plant, which is still a considerable British rarity, was first recorded in 1641 by the great botanist Thomas Johnson (d. 1644). It has a striking appearance and can grow to over a metre tall. Until the beginning of the 20^th century it was only to be found in Kent.
