Catalogue Note

The Study of a the Head of the Deer is directly linked to Landseer's 1826 oil painting The Hunting of Chevy Chase (Birmingham City Museum). The fleeing beast, with its wonderfully realistic startled expression, is drawn in exactly the same pose as the deer on the far right of the painting.
