Catalogue Note

This drawing depicts a recruiting officer preceding his drummer, aides and volunteers in front of the Sun Inn in Bodmin, Cornwall. In the middle distance a portly trumpeter proclaims the presence of a travelling fair, whilst to the left locals sell their wares. To the left of the Inn's door, a cobbler has set up his stall, while to the right, a lady inspects linen.

The Sun Inn at Bodmin appears in several Rowlandson drawings. For example, it features in his Market Place, Cornwall 1 and in his Bodmin, Cornwall: The Arrival of the Stage Coach. 2 The latter drawing is inscribed 1795 and it has been suggested that the present work dates for the same period.
