Condition

This pastel has been well preserved and carefully presented. In several areas of the composition some of the pastel pigment has been rubbed. This is most evident on the sitter's chin. In the background there are very small areas of pigment loss, however these can only be seen on close inspection. The original frame has been very well preserved. Please note that this pastel has not been examined out of its frame.

Catalogue Note

Born in 1732, Susanna was the daughter of Henry Hoare II by his marriage to Susan Holt. In 1753 she married Charles Boyle, Viscount Dungarvan (1729-1759), son and heir to the Earl of Cork and Orrery, and a close neighbour of her father's. Dungarvan died early in 1759 and for the intervening years until her second marriage to Thomas Brudenell Bruce, 1st Earl of Ailesbury (1729-1814), Susanna resided at Stourhead with her father. The present portrait was probably executed during this interim an idea re-enforced by the fact that she is dressed in half mourning and a widows cap.
