Catalogue Note

Born in 1773, Charles Brudenell-Bruce was the eldest son of Thomas Brudenell-Bruce, 1st Earl of Ailesbury K.T. (1729-1814) by his first marriage to Susanna Hoare. Styled The Honourable Charles Brudenell-Bruce from birth until 1776, Lord Bruce from 1776 to 1814 and The Earl of Ailesbury from 1814 to 1821, the sitter enjoyed a brief military career, serving with the Berkshire Militia as an ensign, before a promotion to the rank of colonel in the Wiltshire Yeomanry in 1797. A political career followed and from 1796 to 1814 he served as M.P. for Marlborough until he inherited his father's titles. In 1793 he married Henrietta Maria, daughter of 1st Baron Berwick of Attingham, and upon her death he married Maria Elizabeth, grand-daughter of the 7th Countess of Dysart.
