Catalogue Note

No watercolour by Schouten of similar scale and quality to this has appeared on the market since the splendid view of the Groote Kerk, Haarlem, sold in 1998. The typically Dutch location depicted has not so far been identified, but must have been close to a significant port, given the notice above the shop door advertising the sale of expensive imported goods (coffee, tea, salt, soap).
