Condition

Fixed with a series of Japan paper tabs to a modern card backing (presumably not stuck down). Blue in sky may well have been added, and is extensively flaked. Ink somewhat faded.

Catalogue Note

The suggested attribution to van Beijeren is based on the reading of the initials, although no comparable works by the artist are known.  In fact, the handling is much closer to that seen in the group of superb early pen drawings made by Willem van de Velde the Elder, during the 1630s.
