Catalogue Note

This attractive sheet is typical of Urbino's pen and ink drawings, although it is unusually large in size compared with the known works on paper by the artist.  It is obviously a preparatory study but we know of no surviving related painting.  It can be compared stylistically with another pen and ink drawing of Augustus and the Tiburtine Sybil, also squared for transfer, sold, London, Sotheby's, 4 July 1985, lot 32 Urbino's calm and fluid penmanship lends a delicacy and softness to this Nativity scene.
