Catalogue Note

The rare still-life drawing on the verso is very reminiscent of the work of Jan Davidsz. de Heem (see also lot 115), who from 1636 was working in Antwerp, alongside Adriaen Brouwer, to whom this drawing was formerly attributed.  The references to both these artists, together with evidence of the stylistic influence of David Teniers, suggest that this accomplished and intriguing drawing is indeed Flemish in origin, rather than Dutch, although no convincing attribution has yet been proposed.
