Catalogue Note
The majority of Gerrit de Heer's known works are lively peasant scenes, such as the present one, but are generally pen and ink compositions. There seems to be no reason to think he did not work in gouache, as his sister Margareta is well-known for her natural history compositions in that medium. Gerrit's son and pupil Willem sometimes signed with the initial G. (Guillam) and the stylistic differences between their works are subtle in the extreme, but here the subject matter indicates it is the work of Gerrit.
