Catalogue Note
By 1970, the year this work was painted, Casson had retired from Sampson Matthews and was devoting himself to painting. He was by now enjoying sell-out shows at Roberts Gallery, for which crowds lined up around the block, as though for a rock concert. Casson was by then, along with A.Y. Jackson, one of the two living members of the Group of Seven and still its youngest. Given A.Y.'s advanced age and increasing fragility, Casson became the de facto spokesperson for the Group. Works like Below Ragged Falls capture the vitality of a painter in his prime with its tremendous energy and tropical jungle-like richness.
