Catalogue Note
Throughout the late 1920s and 1930s, Carmichael painted in many parts of Ontario, but was specifically captivated by the La Cloche region of the province with its rugged beauty of crystalline lakes and quartzite hills. In 1935, after repeated trips to La Cloche, he built a cabin there still used by the family today.
Unlike fellow members of the Group of Seven, Carmichael worked mainly in watercolour. With this medium he sought to express something of the grandeur and space of this rugged landscape, beginning by executing small watercolour sketches on the spot and working these up into studio works in either oil or watercolour.
