Catalogue Note
Unlike other landscape artists, Ivan Eyre never painted on location nor sketched en plein air. His paintings therefore are a combination of his personal memories and imagination, and not true to any specific place. Woodcock notes that: "Eyre is serving notice that what we are seeing is not a landscape au naturel, but a country of the mind whose elements are brought together, not for the purpose of recreating what exists out there in actuality, but in order to make a new combination, a new statement of relationships in the language of visual form".
