Catalogue Note
Tanabe’s meditations on the landscapes of the shorelines, islands, bays, inlets, straits, and other waterways of the inland waters west of Vancouver have now achieved a sort of special status. Whether in rain or shine, in mist, fog, or sunset, whether close up or across an expanse of water and time, his depictions of either general or specific scenes, as this one is, stir up one’s memories. Or sometimes more abstract thoughts – reveries that have a universal quality.
His impeccable technique (he was also a master printer and a typographic designer in an earlier part of his life) combines with his poetic images to form evocative but not saccharine vistas. Like all good painting, Tanabe’s canvases in this long and sustained series are at once a landscape and a mirror. In them, we see not just a part of the world, but a part of ourselves.
