Catalogue Note

Of his childhood years, Tony Scherman once recalled “my mother was chasing art, like a lot of people do, trying to find something. I must have been to every cathedral in southwestern Europe.” When Scherman was eight, his mother would take her own life.

Painted in wax encaustic—with all its liturgical connotations—the child from In the Arms of Someone New bears a striking resemblance to the fleeing boy in Caravaggio’s The Martyrdom of St. Matthew, housed in Rome’s Church of San Luigi dei Francesi.

Perhaps here, through his allusion to that painting, Scherman is channeling, resurrecting, counseling, his younger self.
