Catalogue Note

Welsh-Ovcharov writes: "By the mid-80s Pachter's examination of abstract form within a representational framework is readily seen in two paintings of butter tarts titled State of the Tarts, 1985 and 1988 ... Pachter's ongoing search for Canadian symbols led to his claim that butter tarts were as indigenous to English Canada as croissants were to France, or doughnuts to the U.S.A. These handsome still-lifes recall motifs favoured by Roy Lichtenstein and Wayne Thiebaud among American Pop Artists. In the first version, the illusionistic treatment of the tart platter contrasts with the stark flatness of the dark blue tablecloth and the brown and black vertical background stripes, which can be read as abstractly as the bold stripe paintings of Guido Molinari."
