Catalogue Note

In the text accompanying Raphel's 1996 retrospective exhibition at the Klinkhoff Gallery in Montréal, Goelman notes: "Certain paintings of Quebec scenery provide invaluable documentation. Pointe-au-Pic, Murray Bay encampment scenes, where Raphael sketched at the specific style of the Montaignais Indian's birch bark wigwams and Maliseet canoes before they became extinct, delight the historian ... In retrospect, Raphael left a precious legacy."

A closely related, albeit slightly smaller, study of this subject is in the collection of the McCord Museum in Montréal.
