Catalogue Note

Brownell trained in Boston at the Museum of Fine Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris, although for most of his life, it was Ottawa that he called home. He was a founding member of the Canadian Art Club whose members included James Wilson Morrice and William Henry Clapp. Considered by some to be "the first among Canadian romantic impressionists," in 1922, Brownell was honoured with a retrospective of his work at the National Gallery of Canada.
