Too lively and vivacious a painter to limit herself to faithful reproduction of the organic subjects for which she is most well-known, Nora Collyer was particularly adept at imbuing her “portraits” of nature with a distinctive sense of character.

Here, the softly rolling hills which form the basis of the picture have a sense of movement that evokes the swell of waves at sea. The lithe, elegant trees—recalling the long-necked subjects of Mannerist portraiture—practically preen for the viewer. Extending their lush canopies high, they reach heavenward, beyond the picture plane, dancing with the blustery sky overhead.
