Catalogue Note
JEH MacDonald moved to Thornhill from High Park in 1912. The MacDonalds' home, known as "Four Elms" was a popular meeting place for artists and welcomed fellow Group members as well as their younger associates for the 75 years it remained in the family.
Shortly after this work was executed, MacDonald assumed the onerous duties of Principal of the Ontario College of Art (now O.C.A.D.). The painting seems all the more poetic for knowing that the artist was unknowingly in the twilight of his own life. "Teaching and its associated troubles" left MacDonald with relatively little time to paint, making works from this period quite rare.
