Catalogue Note

Autograph material by Marin Marais, the principal French Baroque composer for the viol, is rarely offered for sale at auction.

Marin Marais (1656-1728) was one of the outstanding figures in French Baroque music and one of the first French instrumentalists to make his mark as a solo performer (TNG, xv, p.795-796).   Even contemporary editions of Marais's music are scarce and keenly sought-after, to judge by the sparse auction records.
